THE WISH AND THE WAY

EARLY DREAMS
The year was 1943 and I was 3 years old. I remember I was given a wind up train and my grandfather Frank was ill in bed. The train went under the bed in a circle. It was purchased second hand because it was war time and factories were adapted to produce only essential wartime supplies. I don't know if my father was in the room because he was a fireman and he was first on the scene when the bombs dropped. He was sent far away even to Coventry as the night sky lit up.
In the garden there was air raid shelter but it used fill up with water so it wasn't much use. My mother used to take me under the stairs to keep safe. If a bomb hit the house it was generally the safest place to be.
